Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
