Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
